• Fatal Car Accidents in New Jersey
  • August 21, 2017
  • By this time last year, 346 people had been fatally injured in car accidents in the state of New Jersey. This year there are 331 reported fatalities. The 331 people that were fatally injured this year on New Jersey roads included 189 drivers, 47 passengers, 87 pedestrians, and seven bicyclists. Although it is good news that there were fifteen fewer car accident fatalities in the Garden State this year, the statistics are nonetheless cause for concern.

Of the 21 counties in New Jersey, Sussex County had the least fatalities this year so far. As of August 8th, three people had been fatally injured in collisions in the county. The second safest county so far this year has been Hunterdon County, where five people have been fatally injured in car accidents, including a 17-year-old male.

The most dangerous county in the state this year has been Ocean County, where 28 people were fatally injured in 28 individual crashes. Six of those crashes happened on the Garden State Parkway, but county roads proved to be deadlier, with 11 fatal injuries. These include a hit-and-run collision in Lakewood, where a woman riding a bike was struck. Luckily, the perpetrator was later found and arrested.

The second most-deadly county was not far behind Ocean County in fatalities. In Essex County, this year 27 people were fatally injured in 26 car accidents. In one of those crashes, two men were fatally injured in Bayonne when their car struck a utility pole.

In total, 607 people suffered fatal injuries on New Jersey roads in 2016. Hopefully, this year, a safer trend will continue, and fewer people will experience the heartache of a loved one’s passing on the road.
