• Best Hospitals Honor Roll
  • September 9, 2017
  • There are approximately 33 million hospitalizations in a single year in the United States. With so much time directed towards patient care, medical personnel would be extremely proficient, but that is not necessarily the case.

Many hospitals fail to provide a high standard of care even with medical needs that are very straightforward, such as a hip replacement, uncomplicated heart bypass surgery, and more. Even fewer hospitals fail to perform to a high standard on more complicated cases, such as those with complex or challenging diagnoses.

To help people find the best possible hospitals in their location, U.S. News and World Report recently created a list of the best hospitals, along with the Best Hospitals Honor Roll. They ranked hospital performance in 16 areas of complex specialty care, and rated hospitals in nine bellwether procedures and conditions, including heart bypass, hip and knee replacement, heart failure, and lung cancer surgery.

The Honor Roll considers both the specialty rankings and the procedure and condition ratings in its conclusions. If a hospital was ranked in one of 16 specialties, it received points; the more points the hospital received. The top 20 point-earners made the Honor Roll. The top-scoring hospital on the Honor Roll was The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

U.S. News also recognized 535 United States hospitals for 2017-2018, or about one hospital out of 10, as Best Regional Hospitals. The greatest concentration of outstanding regional hospitals was in the New York metro area.

Even though there are certain hospitals that are known for providing an excellent standard of care, all hospitals owe all patients an excellent standard of care, and hospital mistakes are not acceptable.
