  • On June 20, 2018, the federal government announced that Canadians will be able to possess and consume cannabis recreationally under the Cannabis Act as of October 17, 2018. Until that date, cannabis possession and consumption remains illegal, other than for medical purposes in accordance with the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations.

Employers have 17 weeks to ensure they are prepared for the potential impact of legal cannabis on their workplaces. Employers should ensure they are prepared in advance of October 17th, including undertaking a review of their drug and alcohol policies to ensure they address legal recreational cannabis and prohibit impairment in the workplace.
