• Divorce Stemming from Monster-in-Laws
  • September 13, 2017
  • Newlywed couples are often in the honeymoon stage and do not allow outside factors to affect their marriage. Sadly, it is often these outside factors that will later drive the divorce. Divorces happen for a myriad of reasons. A common cited reason involves in-laws. Having a lack of boundaries with in-laws can put a massive strain on a relationship. If amends are not made between the in-laws and spouse, it is very likely that marriage will end in divorce.

At the onset of marriage, it is critical for boundaries to be established between a wife and her spouse’s family. Sadly, these boundaries are never created because men do not want to hurt their mother’s feelings. It can be difficult for a mother to give away control of her son to another woman. Brides all too often become scapegoats for their mother-in-law’s sadness and aggression over giving away their son. This can cause a strain between the husband and wife and can cause them to separate.

Similarly, a mother may put strain on a relationship by being too demanding of her son. A new wife will likely have high expectations of her husband and expect him to be the backbone of the home. A mother may also be extremely reliant on help her son provides her, so it can be stressful for the man to balance both his mother’s and wife’s demands. The mother’s demands will create a tug of war over her son, and often, the frustrated wife will throw in the towel first.

Parents want the best for their children and will sometimes overstep boundaries in their children’s marriages to ensure such. This can result in over-opinionated “monster-in-laws”. In-laws lack of respect for their child’s spouse can often cause an irreparable rift in a marriage. The offending partner might feel abandoned or disrespected. Soon after, resentment will begin to build up and turn the relationship sour.

Often, these issues become so deep-rooted that many couples consider divorce to be the only option. It is recommended to seek marriage and family counseling for a resolution prior to going through with a divorce. In certain cases whereby either party is not willing to attend counseling, a separation may be inevitable. Separations can get messy, but they don’t have to be riddled with anxiety.
