If you steal from work, you get fired. Or worse.
If work steal from you, what happens?
Wage Theft is an epidemic in California. Employers take money out of workers paychecks every single day and for the most part, they get away with it...
WHAT IS WAGE THEFT?
According to a recent UCLA report, Wage theft is the illegal practice of not paying workers for all of their work including; violating minimum wage laws, not paying overtime, forcing workers to work off the clock, and much more.”
Employees need to monitor the hours the work, the breaks they are given and/or denied, the dedications from their paychecks and even more to ensure that their wages are correct. Not all employees know their rights. Here in California, wages can be stolen a number of ways --- employers can fail to pay California minimum wages; employers can fail to pay for overtime worked; employers can fail to pay correct overtime rates; employers can fail to pay for work that was performed off-the-clock; employers can make false or illegal deductions from an employees paycheck; employers can simply pay employees late, misclassify employees as contractors instead of as full-time employees, and in a number of other ways.
Wage Theft is a massive problem here in California. It has been estimated that lower-wage workers lose more than $3,000,0000 every day in Los Angeles alone...Three million dollars a day! That makes Los Angeles the Wage Theft Capital Of The United States!
While a small portion of these businesses steal money from their employees by accident, the vast majority of them are 100% aware that they are literally taking money out of the pockets of employees that keep these businesses going. There are a myriad of state and federal laws that do protect employees from Wage Theft. However, the problem is so rampant, it's impossible for regulators to monitor every business. More importantly, employers know that they can get away with it and rely on the fact that they think employees have no rights...or at least that's what some employers believe.
Employees do have rights.
Employees can fight back.
Employees can get the money they deserve.
WHAT LOW WAGE WORKERS NEED TO KNOW
First and foremost employees need to know that, regardless of what they hear or what their employers tell them, that they have rights. The United States Department Of Labor and State Labor/Employment Agencies exist to make sure that workplaces are safe, wages are regulated, and that employees are protected. Employees also need to know that if their employee rights are violated there are employment lawyers that can help them protect their rights.
