• Study Shows Oldest Siblings Are the Worst Drivers
  • September 26, 2017
  • According to a recent study, younger siblings can rejoice in the fact that they are likely better drivers than their older, first-born brother or sister. While this may give middle and youngest siblings bragging rights at home, it also means that they are less likely to engage in driving behavior that can cause serious accidents. In this case, the older sibling could learn a thing or two about safe driving habits from their younger brother or sister.

The study was conducted by Privilege Car Insurance, which tested the driving habits of 1,395 drivers by equipping a monitor to the participant’s vehicle. After analyzing the results, they found the following out about first-born siblings:

Close to 90 percent are likely to exceed the speed limit
Forty-seven percent cut off other drivers on the road
Forty-six percent tended to swerve in and out of their lane
    Thirty-five percent were fined
Thirty percent admitted to texting while driving
Seventeen percent admitted that they applied makeup while driving
Twenty-seven percent of participants drove through red lights.
Across the board, younger siblings had better driving habits than their first-born brother or sister. In fact, only 42 percent of youngest siblings were likely to cut off other drivers, while only 26 percent monopolized the road. In families that had more than two children, the youngest child had the best driving habits. The study also found that the best drivers on the road today are only children.

    Reasons for Poor Driving Habits
When it comes to justifying their driving habits, the reasons each sibling provided depended on their birth order. For example, first-born siblings said that they would speed, or cut people off if they had a good reason, like running late. On the other hand, middle and younger siblings tended to blame other drivers for their own mistakes.

Regardless of your age, your birth order, or if you even have siblings, operating a motor vehicle is something that we all need to take very seriously. Sometimes we all need a reminder about how important it is to follow the rules of the road and to make safety a priority. There are consequences to unsafe driving behaviors, some of which can cause serious wrecks and severe, often fatal injuries. One moment of poor judgment can cause a lifetime of pain and suffering.
