Imagine being able to make a dinner reservation or reserve a hotel room simply by tapping an icon on your vehicle’s dashboard screen, rather than having to reach for your smartphone. General Motors (GM) plans to equip their newer model cars with an e-commerce technology that will let car owners do everything from reserve a parking space, to order and pay for food by using the touchscreen in their vehicle. While this feature may be appealing to customers and generate revenue for GM, it also has the potential to be a significant distraction to drivers by drawing their attention away from the road.
The auto company plans to automatically upload the GM Marketplace technology to approximately two million vehicles that are a 2017 model or later. By the end of 2018, nearly four million GM vehicles, including Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac brands, will be equipped with the technology, according to the Vice President for GM’s global connected customer experience.
Future of E-Commerce Technology
Other car companies are offering e-commerce technology in their vehicles as well. It is likely that this will become more widely available in newer cars. For example, Ford Motor Co. has partnered with Amazon to offer the Alexa personal assistant system. While the number of vendors available through the GM Marketplace is fairly limited now, they plan to add more vendors in the future. GM also plans to offer additional service promotions through the in-car Marketplace connection. With more choices available to consumers, they are more likely to use it on a regular basis, which can lead to a dramatic increase in distracted driving accidents.
GM has taken this into consideration and is placing limits on the functionality of the Marketplace, since motorists use the feature while they are driving. They will have a limited number of choices on the storefront screen. For example, if a customer taps on the Starbucks icon, they will only be able to choose from a few drink options, rather than the entire beverage and food menu. Customers will have the option of updating their favorites using their smartphone when they are no longer driving. Even with the limited menu items to choose from, while the driver is choosing an item and placing an order, their attention is focused on the dashboard screen and not on the road. As more items become available, the driver has more choices to consider, which could result in more distracted driving wrecks.
