According to a recently published study by researchers at the Colorado School of Public Health’s Center for Health, Work & Environment on the Colorado University Anschutz Medical Campus, certain health factors can increase the likelihood of becoming injured at work. Specifically, women who suffer from depression, anxiety, and fatigue are at greater risk of suffering from a workplace injury compared to men. Researchers believe that a more integrated approach to safety will be necessary to ensure the safety of all workers.
Researchers collaborated with the largest Workers’ Compensation insurer in Colorado to analyze claim data from 314 businesses that represented a range of industries. Nearly 17,000 employees were represented in the study, ranging from executives to laborers. They found the following results:
While men were more likely to be injured at work, behavioral health factors did not directly affect their risk of injury.
Women were more likely to report a mental or behavioral health issue.
Conditions like depression, anxiety, and fatigue increased women’s risk of getting injured on the job.
Close to 60 percent of women said that they experienced a behavioral health issue prior to becoming injured, compared to only 33 percent of men.
Overall, both male and female workers who had a previous injury were more likely to be injured again.
Dr. Natalie Schwatka, lead author of the study, said that the study findings are important because they demonstrate that keeping workers safe calls for an integrated approach that connects health, well-being, and safety. Typical safety programs do not offer this type of approach. Additional research can help gain a better understanding of why women are at greater risk for injuries under certain circumstances. For example, social and cultural factors may explain why women are more likely to report a behavioral health concern than men. In addition, said Schwatka, women may be experiencing other stresses, including how to successfully balance a busy job with family responsibilities. These are all issues that warrant further research in the future.
