Families with children should be cautious around the holiday season. While toys are meant to be an entertaining and enjoyable experience for children, many of the latest products come with hazards that may result in product liability accidents if not handled correctly.
According to World Against Toys Causing Harm (W.A.T.C.H.), unsafe toys remain an ongoing problem. Poor design, inconsistent and inadequate warnings, and recalled toys pose a problem, as parents often purchase products for their children without realizing the risks involved, especially when holiday shopping is done online. Toy related injuries have been on the rise in recent years, with one child being treated for a toy related injury every three minutes in the U.S.
Toys with Choking and Strangulation Hazards
Infants and toddlers are especially susceptible to choking hazards, as small children are prone to placing objects into their mouth. Many products on this year’s list feature inappropriate age limits, small parts, and choking hazards, including the recalled Disney-themed plush stacking toy, Itty Bittys, and Brianna Babydoll – a stuffed doll featuring removable clothing and accessories.
Fidget Spinners—the popular spinning toy with no age limit—feature small, removable parts. Plan Toys Oval Xylophone, which is recommended for children as young as 12 months, includes a slender, rigid drumstick handle, which could block a child’s airway if ingested.
Pull Along Pony, a pull toy for children as young as 12 months, has no product warning but features a string that is longer than recommended industry standards, which may present a strangulation hazard or result in an injury due to entanglement.
Toys That May Result in Physical Injury
It goes without saying that weapons may be hazardous to children, but this year’s list features two products that may result in blunt force injuries. The replica Wonder Woman Battle – Action Sword features sharp edges and rigid plastic material that may pose potential impact injuries. The latest Nerf Zombie Strike Deadbolt Crossbow may result in injuries if aimed at a person or animal due to quick firing, pressurized projectiles.
The Slackers Slackline is marketed to children five and up, but features a cautionary warning that the product, which creates a tight-rope when anchored between two trees, can cause serious injury or even death. The outdoor product is a strangulation hazard for small children and can result in severe injury for those who do not use precaution or wear protective gear.
Although intended for children 12 and up, the remote-control Spider-Man Spider-Drone may result in severe impact injuries as it features fast, rotating blades. The product warns to keep sharp rotors away from all body parts.
Jetts Heel Wheels, attachable roller blades intended for children eight and up, feature a warning that states that the use of the product can result in injury or death. Furthermore, the product features real sparking action that may result in a fire hazard or burn injuries.
