On Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, District Court Judge Carl Barbier granted final approval of the Medical Benefits Class Action Settlement that was reached between BP and the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee in the BP Deepwater Horizon litigation. The approved settlement is expected to resolve a large number of the medical claims of those harmed by the 2010 BP oil spill, the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history.
The judge granted final approval of the Economic and Property Damages Settlement, the largest class action settlement in U.S. history, on Dec. 21, 2012.
The settlements cover two distinct classes and two distinct types of claims. BP estimates it will pay approximately $7.8 billion to resolve all of the claims, but there is no dollar cap on payments.
