  • The Office of Inspector General for the Department of Health and Human Services ("OIG") published a letter on January 15, 2003 addressing the ability of hospitals to provide temporary financial assistance in obtaining professional liability insurance to members of their medical staffs. The OIG wrote the letter in response to an unidentified hospital system's inquiry concerning the legality of financially assisting physicians in obtaining malpractice insurance in order to avoid the disruption of medical services.
