  • There have been a lot of unsafe drugs that have been introduced onto the market. Some of these drugs are designed to help people with things that are genuine risks to their health. A good example of this is the drug Chantix. Chantix is manufactured by the Pfizer Corporation, one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. The Pfizer Corporation recently posted its fourth-quarter profits, which showed a 50 percent decline on lowered sales of two of its main drugs, one of them being Chantix. Some of the new stories about the smoking cessation drug are no doubt contributing to this decline in usage.

    Suicide, Homicide and Depression

The FDA has acknowledged that Chantix users have exhibited suicidal behavior and other erratic behaviors. Some lawsuits have alleged that the drug is connected to homicidal behavior and bursts of violence. Chantix currently carries a black box warning, which is designed to let consumers know that the drug is known to have very serious side effects.

Smoking is known to be one of the leading causes of preventable deaths in the United States. It has been this way for many years. This is why some people opt to use drugs like Chantix to help themselves quit. Nicotine addiction, while controversial in some medical circles, is generally acknowledged to be a tough addiction to break. For some consumers, the risks that are associated with smoking are not worth risking suicidal behaviors or other severe psychological disturbances as have been associated with Chantix.

    Being Informed

If the drug is known to have dangerous or deadly side effects and you are informed before you use it, then you are making a decision as a responsible adult. If you weren't informed, however, there is sometimes cause to file a lawsuit. The lawsuits over drugs like Chantix are designed to help reimburse people who have suffered because they allege that they were not informed of the severity or nature of the side effects of the drugs they were using when they were given them.

If you have used Chantix or another drug and don't feel that you were adequately informed of the potential side effects, contact a defective product attorney. Unsafe drugs can do very serious damage. They can even be deadly. If you've lost someone and you believe it was a result of them using one of these drugs, you should also speak with an attorney about filing a lawsuit against the manufacturer.
