Diversity of background, experience, race and ethnicity is a core value and one that deserves support at multiple levels—from recruitment, to training, to opportunity. This value in turn makes us stronger as a firm and the best fit for the rapidly changing world in which we practice. Others have noticed, too. In 2014, WSHB was honored to receive the Defense Research Institute’s Law Firm Diversity Award at DRI’s 20th annual meeting in San Francisco.
WSHB is committed to attracting and retaining diverse talent. Embracing our differences holds promise and opportunity. Our commitment to diversity is reflected in our workplace – 25% of our attorneys are diverse; 44% are women. Our lawyers also come from different parts of the country. We have recruited attorneys from 26 different law schools across 9 states. Compared to its AmLaw 350 peers, WSHB is one of the most diverse law firms in the United States.
What begins with recruiting a diverse workforce has to be followed up with training. We strongly believe in mentoring and training young lawyers. In 1998 we began a summer recruitment program for law students. That program has been a huge success. Many of our former law clerks are still with us today, pursuing productive and rewarding careers at WSHB, including multiple partners who have risen all the way from the law clerk ranks.
The last step in achieving a truly diverse workforce is advancement. We believe in investing time and energy in our team by providing meaningful opportunities for advancement and professional development.
