  • Joanna works with businesses, large and small, to successfully navigate all aspects of the employment relationship. Joanna counsels employers on issues such as hiring and firing employees, managing employee complaints and internal investigations, observing anti-discrimination laws and policies, complying with state and federal wage and hour laws, working with unionized workforces, imposing discipline on employees, and enforcing non-competition agreements after the termination of the employment relationship. Employer’s obligations under the law are constantly growing and changing, and Joanna works to keep both herself and the businesses she represents informed of legal developments and their impact.

Joanna has experience representing employers in a variety of legal forums, including administrative agencies, arbitration proceedings, and state and federal court. She has defended employers against claims of discrimination, harassment and retaliation, breach of contract, failure to pay wages, and unfair labor practices. She has also represented businesses in actions against former employees for, among other things, breaches of non-competition agreements. In addition to her primary focus on labor and employment issues, Joanna represents businesses and property owners with respect to complaints of discrimination in housing and public accommodation.

Prior to joining Verrill Dana, Joanna served as a law clerk to the Honorable Alvin W. Thompson of the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut. As a law clerk, Joanna was required to quickly become well-versed in diverse areas of law and communicate complicated legal principles in a clear and concise manner. Joanna draws on that experience to serve businesses across varied industries with distinct legal needs.

When away from the office, Joanna and her husband can be found exploring Maine and taking advantage of the different activities that each season has to offer. Joanna is an avid runner and enjoys downhill and cross-country skiing.
