  • Rita Heimes works with companies -- from start-ups to large institutions – to help them acquire and protect their intellectual property in the U.S. and abroad. Rita has more than 20 years of experience with counseling clients, teaching, and writing articles in the fields of intellectual property and information privacy law. Her skill in a wide variety of legal issues arising from clients' use and development of technology includes a particular concentration on foreign and domestic trademark and domain name registration, licensing and litigation. She also assists companies with social media, cybersecurity, and electronic communications matters, including compliance with state, federal and international data privacy and security laws. As leader of the firm’s data protection and cyber liability practice sub-group, Rita works closely with clients on incidence response planning, information security programs, data breach prevention, cyber liability insurance advice, and data breach response and crisis management. She has developed a team of privacy and information security experts, including network and device forensics consultants, to assist in crisis situations and be available to clients should they suffer a breach.

    Rita grew up in central Iowa where she learned the value of hard work and the importance of family. Following a clerkship with the Ninth Circuit in Seattle, she practiced law with firms in Seattle, Anchorage, and Boulder before settling in Maine and joining Verrill Dana in 1998. From 2001-2014, Rita was a law professor and Director of the Center for Law + Innovation at the University of Maine School of Law where she founded the Intellectual Property Clinic and ultimately served as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. She returned to the firm in 2014.

    Rita and her husband, Gene, live in Portland. They enjoy cycling and Nordic skiing, and devote time to their schools and community while raising four active and delightful children.
