  • Prior to attending law school, Sam was a reporter and editor at several midcoast Maine newspapers. There, he learned the importance of building and maintaining productive relationships with people from all walks of life—from small business owners to public officials to the regulars at the local coffee shop. Sam brings this desire to understand each individual's particular background and needs into all of his work.

    Sam received his law degree from the University of Maine School of Law, where he graduated summa cum laude and received an Outstanding Scholastic Achievement Award in Taxation and the Edward S. Godfrey Leadership Award for his work as the Editor-in-Chief of the Maine Law Review. Sam worked as a Research Assistant to Professor Jeffrey Maine, assisting him in preparing the second edition of Intellectual Property Taxation: Problems and Materials, by Jeffrey A. Maine & Xuan-Thao Nguyen. After law school, Sam served as a law clerk for Maine Supreme Judicial Court Justice Donald Alexander, working on a wide array of legal issues in numerous areas of the law, developing an intimate understanding of the litigation process and honing his legal research skills.

Biography

Sam works on a variety of employee benefits matters, researching and distilling complex aspects of ERISA and tax law. Sam drafts summary plan descriptions and other participant communications, prepares corrections of retirement plan administrative errors under IRS voluntary correction procedures, and assists in advising clients on all aspects of pension and welfare plan design and compliance.

Sam received his law degree from the University of Maine School of Law, where he graduated summa cum laude and received an Outstanding Scholastic Achievement Award in Taxation and the Edward S. Godfrey Leadership Award for his work as the Editor-in-Chief of the Maine Law Review. Sam worked as a Research Assistant to Professor Jeffrey Maine, assisting him in preparing the second edition of Intellectual Property Taxation: Problems and Materials. After law school, Sam served as a law clerk for Maine Supreme Judicial Court Justice Donald Alexander.

Sam is a life-long fan of the New England Patriots and an avid fly fisherman. During the summer, he spends much of his free time hiking and exploring remote streams. During the winter, he talks about learning to ski.

Vantage Learning USA, LLC v. Edgenuity, Inc. - Online Educational Software Litigation
Verrill Dana defended Edgenuity, Inc., a client providing online educational technology in litigation brought by Vantage Learning USA, LLC, demanding nearly $900,000 in damages for breach of contract and related claims in addition to a copyright infringement claim. A cross-disciplinary team of Verrill Dana attorneys from multiple offices was able to win dismissal of the majority of plaintiff’s claims with prejudice.
