Sara has experience helping clients protect their brand through management and enforcement of their intellectual property rights. An experienced litigator, Sara has litigated claims for copyright, trademark and trade dress infringement in federal courts in New York, Massachusetts and Maine across a variety of industries, including fashion and design, hospitality, and nutritional supplements. Her experience extends to all facets of the litigation process, from preliminary motion practice to discovery to witness examination to post-trial briefing.
Sara also assists client in protecting their brands outside of litigation. Sara assists clients in managing and protecting their brand across a variety of industries. Her experience spans the entire lifecycle of brand creation and management. This includes analyzing the suitability of registration as well as assessing the risk posed by existing products and brands in the marketplace. Sara also assists clients with the registration process for copyrights, trademarks and trade dress, and helps clients manage intellectual property rights in existing brands or products. This includes monitoring for unauthorized use by others in the marketplace and facilitating the licensing of existing intellectual property.
Sara’s practice extends beyond the United States. She helps foreign clients in securing intellectual property rights within the United States as well as obtaining foreign protection for rights secured domestically.
In addition to her experience handling intellectual property disputes, Sara has broad experience in complex business disputes, franchise and dealer litigation, and probate litigation. She has helped clients successfully litigate disputes between franchisors and franchisees, shareholders in corporate disputes, a corporation in a legal malpractice action, as well as disputes between manufacturers and product distributors. No matter the nature of the dispute, Sara is a dedicated advocate for her clients who strives to ensure that disputes are resolved as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Prior to joining Verrill Dana, Sara worked at some of Boston and Philadelphia’s best-known law firms.

Franchisor Representation: Termination of Franchisee/Dealer
We represented a Maine-based manufacturer/distributor of automated retrieval systems who needed assistance defending its termination of a Minnesota-based dealer of its products. Calling on their extensive experience and knowledge of state franchise laws around the United States, and Maine Franchise Law in particular, our team of litigators was able to gain a favorable arbitration result by establishing that our client had no liability in terminating this dealer.
We settled a claim on behalf of an inventor against former attorneys for failure to secure patent right in the sale of the client’s biometric payment business to competitor.
Matter of Clerk-Magistrate Robert E. Powers
Tom Bean was appointed by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court as Special Counsel to the Clerks' Committee in a matter involving a Clerk-Magistrate whose conduct had been called into question.

Pro Bono Representation of Political Asylum Seeker
After learning of the plight of a refugee of the Somalian civil war through their involvement with the Immigrant’s Legal Assistance Program, Verrill Dana attorneys donated their time to assist her in obtaining political asylum in the United States.
Trademark Infringement: The Brunswick Inn
Verrill Dana helped The Brunswick Inn protect its trademark when a new hotel opened with a confusingly similar name.
Vantage Learning USA, LLC v. Edgenuity, Inc. - Online Educational Software Litigation
Verrill Dana defended Edgenuity, Inc., a client providing online educational technology in litigation brought by Vantage Learning USA, LLC, demanding nearly $900,000 in damages for breach of contract and related claims in addition to a copyright infringement claim. A cross-disciplinary team of Verrill Dana attorneys from multiple offices was able to win dismissal of the majority of plaintiff’s claims with prejudice.
