  • Many professional-service certification marks combine descriptive terms like "certified," "registered," or "professional" with the name of an occupation or professional position to form a descriptive mark. Descriptive marks can be registered on the PTO's Supplemental Register, but such registrations do not receive the many substantive benefits and presumptions of Principal Register registrations. Generic terms are not protectable or registrable under any circumstances.
