Barbara grew up in Nevada and attended UNLV, where she was selected as Nevada's Truman Scholar in 1979 and received her B.A. degree with high distinction in 1980. She received her J.D. degree cum laude from University of California Hastings College of Law in 1984. She is licensed to practice in all California courts, and in the United States District Courts for the Southern, Central, and Northern Districts of California.
She began her legal career at Gray Cary Ames & Frye in San Diego in 1984, where she practiced in the firm's litigation group and was elected to the partnership in 1991. Over the past three decades Gary Cary has grown from one of San Diego's largest firms to one of the world's largest, now known as DLA Piper. In early 2011 Barbara moved her large firm experience to a solo practice that is better tailored to the needs of her clients.
Barbara's clients include beneficiaries, trustees, parties to conservatorship and elder financial abuse proceedings, and estate creditors. She has handled a wide variety of disputes, including:
· breach of duty and accounting claims
· creditor's claims
· efforts to recapture assets
· removal actions
· undue influence claims
· beneficiary disputes over family assets or the interpretation of estate planning documents
· efforts by family members to resolve disagreements privately, outside of public proceedings.
