Biography

Mr. Kaplan practices exclusively in the areas of business litigation and business counseling on a variety of matters. Recent litigation matters include partnership and shareholder disputes; non‐competition/non solicitation disputes, real estate matters and “C” level employment litigation.

Mr. Kaplan has nearly 20 years of experience in the San Diego and California legal community. From 1996 to 2011, Mr. Kaplan was an attorney with the law firm Coughlan, Semmer & Lipman, LLP, located in San Diego, California. There he worked with renowned trial attorneys R.J. Coughlan, Michael Lipman and Robert Semmer on complex civil and white‐collar criminal matters. Mr. Kaplan’s practice focused on the representation of professionals in liability matters, including the defense of law firms, lawyers, and accountants in malpractice actions. Mr. Kaplan also handled a variety of business litigation matters, such as contract disputes in state and federal court, embezzlement cases on behalf of both victims and defendants, fraud matters, and partnership disputes, just to name a few examples.

Early in his career at Coughlan, Semmer & Lipman, LLP, Mr. Kaplan participated in the defense of individuals charged with various state and federal white collar crimes. This work included handling large scale internal investigations, legal research, motion preparation and sentencing matters.

Based upon his skill and ethics, Mr. Kaplan has been awarded an AV Preeminent® rating from Martindale Hubbell. He also enjoys an Excellent Rating from Avvo.com. Mr. Kaplan was admitted to the California State Bar in December 1995, and has been admitted to the Southern and Central Federal District Courts, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of the United States. He has appeared and argued appellate cases and tried cases before the courts in San Diego.

Mr. Kaplan received a BA in Social Ecology with Honors from the UC Irvine, and JD from Hastings College of
Law.
