As a tax and corporate lawyer he has dedicated much of his career to helping companies establish themselves in Puerto Rico. He has counseled pharmaceutical companies, airlines, manufacturing companies, retailers, financial advisors and film companies in making the most of the benefits provided by the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico for new starts, including obtaining tax exemption decrees, the receipt of actual cash subsidies and the purchasing of foreign tax credits. He has over 30 years of professional legal experience in the private sector, representing large, international, multi-national corporations, business entities and groups in complex business transactions; corporate and business organization; tax exemptions; mergers and acquisitions; reorganizations; negotiations and formalizations of contracts; mediations and arbitrations; estate and tax planning; and application of international treaties, federal laws, and regulations.
He attended Universidad Complutense de Madrid and the Exeter College at Oxford University. He is a graduate of Georgetown University, B.S.F.S., 1974, the Tulane University School of Law, J.D., 1977 and holds a Masters Degree in Taxation from Boston University, LL.M., 1978. He was admitted to the Bar in Louisiana in 1977 and in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico in 1979. He is also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Tax Court, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. He is also Uniform Code of Military Justice, Article 27(b) qualified.
John is a member of the Puerto Rico, Louisiana State, American (Member, Sections on: Corporation, Banking and Business Law; Economics of Law Practice; Taxation; Litigation) and Federal Bar Associations. He speaks Spanish and English.
He is also Past President of the Puerto Rico Boy Scouts of America, 1991-1995. Member: Board Directors, North East Region Boy Scouts of America, 2000 and of the Santurce Rotary Club.
