Chris Sweeney is Senior Counsel in the Washington, DC office of Peckar & Abramson. Mr. Sweeney focuses on representing clients in the construction and power industries, including EPC and design-build contractors, general contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, and sureties. Mr. Sweeney is a civil engineer by education with a dual focus on structural design and construction project management.


After receiving his degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Mr. Sweeney worked as a design-build engineer and project manager for a structural steel and concrete subcontractor in the Washington DC metro region. Using this education and experience, Mr. Sweeney represents clients in the construction industry in a variety of matters including breach of contract claims, design and latent defect claims, differing site conditions and delay claims, payment and performance bond claims, mechanic’s liens, and claims for equitable adjustment.

Mr. Sweeney represents clients in litigation and alternative dispute resolution proceedings related to projects ranging from home renovation and repair to design and construction of multi-million dollar structures and facilities. Mr. Sweeney represents clients in various industries and related to both public and private projects. In addition to representing clients in adversarial proceedings, Mr. Sweeney works with his clients at all stages of construction projects to try to mitigate and avoid potential risks. Mr. Sweeney is experienced in drafting and negotiating contracts and subcontracts; analyzing contract documents; and advising clients of potential pitfalls before construction starts.

After graduating from law school, Mr. Sweeney began his legal career as an associate at an insurance-coverage law firm in Washington, DC that represented policyholders in litigation and alternative dispute resolution against insurance carriers seeking payment under various types of insurance policies. Mr. Sweeney’s practice included representing project owners, contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers against their insurance companies seeking defense and indemnity coverage for lawsuits and claims related to defective construction, products liability, as well as personal injury from asbestos and other toxic materials.
