Joe’s reputation as a fighter was born of survival. He grew up in a near north side Chicago slum tenement in a rough neighborhood shared by several gangs. He learned at an early age that hard work and education was the only way out of poverty. Reiter enlisted in the U.S. Army twice. The first time he was sent home because he was too young. He went on to serve in the Seventh Infantry Division in Korea.Joe attended the University of Illinois and received a Juris Doctor degree from Stetson University where he was a Dana Scholar. On the eve of graduation in 1968, he accepted an offer to join a West Palm Beach law firm where he and Lake Lytal, Jr. practiced together until they started their own firm in 1985.
