Andrew R. Stern is of counsel with Foley & Lardner LLP. He is a member of the firm's Real Estate, Construction and International Practices and the Energy, Hospitality, Resort & Golf and Health Care Industry Teams.
Mr. Stern has particular experience in national office and retail leasing, as well as in advising design and construction companies. He regularly writes and speaks on leasing and construction topics including sustainable development and green leasing.
Mr. Stern has handled a wide variety of real estate matters, including:
· Construction and permanent financing
· Site acquisition and assembly
· Permitting and zoning
· Architects licensing and contracts
· Contractor and construction manager contracts
· Development, brokerage and property management agreements
· Partnership and limited liability company agreements
· Land disposition agreements with governmental authorities
· Creation of condominium and other forms of common ownership vehicles, including cooperatives
In addition to his extensive background in traditional real estate matters, Mr. Stern also frequently works with the Business Law Department on the real estate aspects of mergers and acquisitions, financings, environmental matters and other due diligence.
Prior to joining Foley, Mr. Stern was a member of the national firm of Epstein Becker & Green, P.C. Mr. Stern was also previously a vice president of the hotel company, ITT Sheraton Corporation, as well as The Carlson Group, Inc., a national design and construction specializing in data centers and telecom facilities. While at Sheraton, Mr. Stern worked with the company's development team on numerous U.S. and international hotel acquisitions, management contracts and property dispositions.
A graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, Mr. Stern received his J.D. in 1976. He also holds a B.A., (summa cum laude and honors in politics) from Brandeis University (1973), where he was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
Mr. Stern has been Peer Review Rated as AV® Preeminent™, the highest performance rating in Martindale-Hubbell's peer review rating system. He was also named to the 2006 and 2007 Massachusetts Super Lawyers® lists, an honor received by only 5% of Massachusetts attorneys.
Mr. Stern is admitted to practice in Massachusetts, New York, the District of Columbia and before the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts (Eastern District), U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court.
He is a member of the board of directors and president of the Lawyers Clearinghouse on Affordable Housing. His other community activities include serving as former chair of the Newton Parks & Recreation Commission, the Newton Community Preservation Act Committee, the Mayor's Landscape Advisory Council, and past president of the Newton Schools Foundation.
He is a member of the Massachusetts Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council as well as an Overseas Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine in London.
