Biography

Chanley T. Howell is a partner in the Intellectual Property Department of Foley & Lardner LLP, and he is a member of the firm's Information Technology & Outsourcing and Privacy, Security & Information Management Practices and Health Care Industry Team. Mr. Howell represents companies in a variety of technology law areas, such as:

· Software Agreements - Software licensing, software support and maintenance; joint development, IT professional and consulting services

· Data Privacy and Security Compliance - Counsel and advise clients with respect to compliance with data privacy and security laws requirements and obligations, including federal laws (Gramm-Leach-Bliley, HIPAA); FTC privacy requirements; state data privacy, security and breach notification laws; regulatory risk assessment and compliance audits; privacy and information security policies; records retention, destruction and management policies

· Technology Agreements - IT outsourcing; EHR (electronic health record) system agreements; patent, copyright and trademark licenses; joint development and marketing agreements; telecommunications agreements; technology acquisition and distribution agreements; IT/IP due diligence for mergers and acquisitions

· Internet - Online agreements, domain names, web site terms and conditions, privacy policies, social media policies

Mr. Howell is a founder and the former chairman of the Intellectual Property section of The Jacksonville Bar Association. Mr. Howell is a member of the Intellectual Property Law and Business Law sections of The Florida Bar; a member of the Business Law and Intellectual Property sections of the American Bar Association; and a member of the Intellectual Property section of The Jacksonville Bar Association. Mr. Howell has served on the Fourth Judicial Circuit Grievance Committee, which investigates allegations of attorney misconduct. He is the professional responsibility partner for Foley's Jacksonville office. In recognition of his experience, Mr. Howell has been Peer Review Rated as AV® Preeminent™, the highest performance rating in Martindale-Hubbell's peer review rating system and in 2011 the Legal 500 recognized Mr. Howell for his work in technology: data protection and privacy.

Born in Jacksonville, Mr. Howell graduated with honors from the University of Florida College of Law (J.D., 1988), and received his undergraduate degree, cum laude, from Vanderbilt University (B.A., 1985). Mr. Howell is immediate past chairman of the Alumni Board, and former member of the board of trustees for the Bolles School.
