David R. Schenk is a partner in the Chicago office of Barnes & Thornburg LLP. He concentrates his practice in real estate with an emphasis on construction and development related transactions and disputes. The following reflect the scope and sophistication of his experience and practice: Development related projects in Chicago include representing a department store in the development of a flagship downtown location, including TIF, the developer in the financing, construction and related organizational structuring for the mixed use project at 900 N Michigan, and the developer of the mixed use project at 800 N. Michigan. Construction related projects reflecting diversity in product and geography include The Galleria Shopping Center Expansion, Houston, Texas, Constellation Place Office Building, Century City, California and the Marriot Times Square Hotel, New York, NY. Mr. Schenk has also been engaged in connection with the purchase and sale of major commercial properties, including representing the buyer of the retail development at 600 N. Michigan, Chicago, Illinois, the seller of the Rookery, a landmark Chicago office building and the seller of Old Orchard Shopping Center, Skokie, Illinois. His more recent engagements include construction and development counsel for casino projects in three different states, zoning counsel for the casino project in Des Plaines, Illinois (including the creation of a new "casino" district under the City zoning code), lender counsel to liquidate millions of dollars of mechanic lien claims by multiple claimants, and outside real estate counsel for a national bus company Mr. Schenk is a trained mediator and has been asked to serve as an expert witness in real estate related litigation. He has also authored and published articles on construction and has been asked to speak regularly at real estate conferences. He has provided his services on a pro bono basis to various not for profit organizations. Mr. Schenk earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration from the University of Michigan. He received his law degree from the John Marshall Law School. He is admitted to practice in the State of Illinois. |
