Hunton & Williams' Government Relations practice ranges from Congress, the Administration and federal regulatory agencies, to state legislatures, executive branches and regulatory bodies, to the various governmental forums of Europe, Latin America and Asia. Our Government Relations team, which is comprised of attorneys and legislative professionals, is committed to advocating effectively our clients' interests before federal, state, local, overseas and international governing bodies. Current members of Hunton & Williams include a former United States Ambassador, a former governor and attorney general of Virginia, a former member of the United States House of Representatives, and attorneys with substantive expertise with major legislation, administrative and regulatory matters. Former members of the firm include a former state governor who served in the United States Senate, a former university president, and the dean of a major law school. The effectiveness of our Government Relations practice is based upon our competence and credibility, which have allowed us to forge strong and trusting relationships with elected officials. Our federal Government Relations team represents clients throughout the United States. We have worked with Congressmen and Senators from nearly every state.


 

Services Available

Our federal legislative projects have been numerous and diverse, including detailed, substantive work on the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, the Superfund Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, various National Energy Acts and successive tax and deficit reduction acts. Team members also work with Congress and the Administration in areas of taxation, municipal bond financing, antitrust, copyright, telecommunications, commercialization of outer space, natural resources, coal transportation, government contracts, health care, conservation, coastal development and commercial fishing, as well as investigation and oversight proceedings before various Congressional committees.

Our federal Government Relations team supports our extensive federal regulations practice, working with congressional and executive branch offices on matters affecting our clients before federal departments, agencies and the White House. These matters have included private and public tax rulings and treasury regulations, regulations proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency, energy proceedings before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Department of Energy and the Federal Emergency Management Agency; matters before the Federal Communications Commission; labor and immigration issues, contract grievances, Social Security and Medicaid, federal appointments to various courts, boards and commissions, and a host of other matters.

Hunton & Williams' team members lobby on a wide range of issues affecting health care, consumer privacy, technology matters such as the Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act ("UCITA"), the environment, trade restrictions, tort reform, taxation, alcoholic beverage control, public utility regulation, telecommunications, telemarketing, trusts and estates, banking, insurance, motion pictures, corporation and partnership laws, forestry and agriculture. We advise clients on the management and implementation of political action committees and political strategy. When the legislatures are not in session, our Government Relations team regularly monitors legislative and regulatory study committees. We have strong ties with local elected officials through our representation of local governments on bond, environmental and other issues. In addition, several team members provide advice and counsel to mayors and other local elected officials on matters impacting their communities.

Our Government Relations practice also has an international dimension. Members of our team in our Brussels office represent clients, including trade associations, and American, European and Japanese companies, before the European institutions. Our Brussels team has assisted clients with lobbying on European policies and, in particular, proposed regulation on waste, product take-back, chemicals, anti-dumping, export controls, and product standards. Our team members have strong ties with European regulators, including European Commission officials.

Our breadth of expertise at the federal, state and international levels benefits our clients who currently face challenges in all of these forums on issues including financial privacy, infringement of domain names, digital signatures, health care and technology-related developments.

While our Government Relations team members have close ties to both major political parties, Hunton & Williams as an institution has always been recognized for its independence from partisan politics.
