Mr. Keyes is a partner in our Real Property & Planning group in Calgary. His practice has an emphasis in the area of real estate development and financing. Mr. Keyes has advised clients with respect to land assembly, annexation, purchase, subdivision, re-zoning, development approvals, financing, leasing, management and sale of commercial and institutional projects, as well as public/private sector initiatives.
Mr. Keyes often advises clients making strategic business decisions, and is routinely involved in the negotiation and preparation of complex commercial agreements and security documentation. His practice includes facilitating regulatory and bylaw approvals and compliance, and he has had extensive dealings with Calgary City Council, Calgary Planning Commission, Calgary Subdivision and Development Appeal Board and similar administrative bodies in other municipalities.
Mr. Keyes is recognized by the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, a guide to the leading law firms and practitioners in Canada, in the area of property development, as well as by the Euromoney Guide to the World's Leading Real Estate Lawyers.
In addition to his legal background, Mr. Keyes has considerable business experience, having previously worked as a project supervisor in a construction company, and as a financial analyst and credit officer in his early career.
Mr. Keyes received his BA from Brigham Young University in 1979 and his LLB and MBA from Dalhousie University in 1983. Mr. Keyes is a member of the Law Society of Alberta, the Canadian Bar Association, the Calgary Bar Association, the Inter-Pacific Bar Association, and the International Council of Shopping Centres. He has been a sessional lecturer at the Alberta Bar Admission Course and has presented educational seminars to industry and client groups.
