Richard S. Cohen
For more than 35 years, Mr. Cohen has represented employers in federal and state courts and before administrative law judges on a variety of litigation matters. He has successfully defended employers in several of the most significant private class actions in the Southwest. In addition, he has substantial experience defending lawsuits filed by the EEOC and state agencies on behalf of a class. He also litigates non-compete, non-solicitation and trade secrets misappropriation disputes. Mr. Cohen also has a substantial mediation and arbitration practice.
Mr. Cohen advises both private and public employers on day-to-day legal issues affecting the workplace, including employee discipline and terminations, sexual harassment and other employee misconduct, workplace privacy, disability accommodations and other human resources issues. Taking a proactive approach when advising clients, Mr. Cohen emphasizes creative solutions to employee relations problems and routinely counsels management about ways to prevent costly and protracted litigation. He teaches executives, managers and supervisors how to make sound human resources decisions, in order to minimize litigation risks. Before beginning in private practice, Mr. Cohen served in the General Counsel's office of the EEOC from 1972 - 1976.
Mr. Cohen is a fellow in the College of Labor and Employment Law. He has been listed in Best Lawyers in America for more than 15 years and has also been listed regularly in the highest tier of Chambers, U.S.A. and in Superlawyers. He also maintains an AV Preeminent rating by Martindale-Hubbell. He serves as a member of the Labor and Employment Law Committee of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Cohen has served six years on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors for Free Arts of Arizona, a non-profit organization that provides assistance to homeless and abused children.
Mr. Cohen received his B.A. in 1968 from Rutgers University and his J.D., with honors, from the George Washington University School of Law in 1971.
