Energy & Energy-Related Practices

Troutman Sanders began serving clients in the energy business in the 1920s. The firm's longstanding familiarity with the industry, and our cutting-edge representations over the years, have made the firm’s Energy & Energy-Related Practices leading providers of legal services to the energy and utility industries worldwide. Over the years, we have been engaged by electric and natural gas utilities on virtually every aspect of their businesses, including mergers, divestitures, investigations, audits, rate filings, and litigation.

The breadth and depth of our experience and energy practice coverage is significant. Among other areas, our Energy & Energy-Related Practices specialize in the following practice areas:

  • Federal Regulation of Electricity and Gas
  • State Regulation of Utilities
  • Nuclear
  • Utility Tax
  • Natural Gas Regulation
  • Electric Transmission
  • Electric Generation and Markets
  • Electric Reliability
  • Energy Commodities and Trading
  • Energy Oversight, Investigations and Enforcement
  • Energy Policy and Legislation
  • Energy and Utility Construction
  • Project Development & Finance
  • Environmental & Natural Resources

Additional cross-practice teams include:

  • Renewable Energy
  • Transmission Development & Construction
  • Climate Change

Our Clients

We represent clients in all aspects of industry operations, financing, contracting and corporate structuring, as well as on every facet of state, federal, and international energy laws and regulations. The firm’s clients include electric utilities (both investor-owned and publicly-owned), independent generators and power marketers, natural gas pipelines, local distribution companies, energy commodity shippers, renewable energy suppliers (wind, traditional hydro, hydrokinetic [river and tidal], solar, biomass), energy funds, banks and other financial institutions and investors. We also represent entities that provide goods and services to utilities including EPC contractors and equipment suppliers.

Our Lawyers

Troutman’s Energy & Industry Regulation Section has built its expertise and influence through the decades by attracting and retaining lawyers who know the field. Section Chief Cliff Sikora was honored by Public Utilities Fortnightly as a leader in his field, specifically as a Groundbreaking Lawyer in the area of Transmission Project Development. Section Chief Kevin Greene was selected as a 2010 Groundbreaking Lawyer for his work in state ratemaking and environmental regulation. Many of our lawyers have served at regulatory commissions both at the state and the federal level, and a number have worked “in-house” for electric and gas utilities.

Our lawyers also have significant experience doing deals and counseling energy clients on virtually every continent: from combined-cycle generating plants in Russia and cogeneration facilities in Israel to an IGCC coal gasification plant in Florida, U.S. In addition, Troutman Sanders has one of the preeminent utility tax practices in the nation with its lawyers having represented many electric utilities as well as the Edison Electric Institute.

We also provide unparalleled electric and natural gas industry training for our associate attorneys. Clients have commented that these associate attorneys provide excellent service value. Importantly, Troutman Sanders is second-to-none in the number of firm lawyers dedicated to the energy industry. In addition to our Energy and Industry Regulation Section, Troutman Sanders’ energy clients benefit from sophisticated representation by lawyers in related practice areas (e.g., complex litigation, environmental & natural resources, mergers, acquisitions & business ventures, tax, transportation & logistics and trading, hedging & marketing). Because of the firm’s extensive energy practice, individual attorneys in other practice areas have considerable experience working for energy industry clients on various issues and transactions.

It means, in part, a commitment by all of our attorneys and all other personnel to a shared vision and the establishment of a workplace environment that is fully inclusive. The Firm values diversity in that it enables the Firm both to take full advantage of the knowledge and talents of a multicultural team in order to meet and exceed individual and business goals and client expectations, and to meet the Firm’s obligation to provide the broadest possible range of opportunities to the members of the communities served by the Firm.

Troutman Sanders defines diversity as an environment of inclusion, in which race, color, religion, sex, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, citizenship, disability, background and social and ethnic group differences are accepted and valued, and all members of the Firm can contribute to their fullest potential to achieve the Firm’s business goals.
