Alicha M. Grubb

Alicha Grubb works in the Commercial Litigation and Construction groups. Alicha handles a variety of commercial litigation matters, including construction matters related to contract negotiations, payment disputes, mechanic’s liens, construction defects, and delay claims for owners, general contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and design professionals. Alicha is also one of the only attorneys in the Commonwealth who represents heavy-duty towing and recovery companies related to highway clean up in connection with VDOT programs. Together with the Governmental and Regulatory Affairs group, Gentry Locke assists these companies in securing favorable legislation and case law. Alicha also handles general disputes involving commercial real estate, corporate management, personal business concerns, and complex litigation matters. Currently, Alicha sits as the Chair of the Virginia Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division (YLD). Prior to joining Gentry Locke, Alicha was a law clerk for the Twenty-third Judicial Circuit.

•If you could take a trip tomorrow, where would you go?

West Virginia. My parents are from there, and my favorite place on earth is this beautiful mountain in Preston County, in the middle of nowhere. I love to sit up there and just be away from the bustle of the world.

•If I wasn’t practicing law...

I would be a contractor... I remodeled my entire house myself - including the plumbing and electrical work! I moved the kitchen to a new room, redid the bathroom, built a deck and took out a staircase. It was very rewarding.

•Why I love being a lawyer...

It allows me to solve problems creatively, which is one of my greatest skills. I enjoy the logic and the opportunity to do something practical to help someone. Whether getting money back for a client or resolving a problem, creating ways to help people in daily life is my motivation for coming to work every day.

Experience

I have tried over 47 trials, including 6 jury trials, representative cases, below:

•Successfully prosecuted a defamation per se claim and received a $1 million jury verdict in Roanoke County. When Words Cross the Line: Lessons from a $1 Million Defamation Verdict - Gentry Locke Attorneys
•Successfully prosecuted a heavy-duty towing and recovery claim to a jury in Rockingham County and received a verdict for the full amount requested - over $200,000.
•Successfully defended a claim and brought a counterclaim for a church client against a former tenant who the jury found failed to pay certain expenses and converted grant funding. Received a jury verdict in Roanoke City for our client in the amount of $374,000.
•Successfully prosecuted ejectment claims against our client’s ex-husband. The case favorably settled in the middle of our jury trial in Bland County Circuit Court.
•Successfully defended personal injury and damage claims by a trucking company against our trucking client to a jury in Roanoke County Circuit Court.
•Successfully defended two cases at trials on behalf of a commercial landlord being sued by former tenants under the Virginia Residential Landlord and Tenant Act in Albemarle Circuit Court.
•Successfully tried a case on behalf of a commercial landlord against a tenant who caused damage to and abandoned the property in Roanoke County Circuit Court.
•Court granted Motion to Dismiss the plaintiff’s declaratory judgment action on the grounds that it was preemptive forum shopping (MCCOA, LLC Retail Service Systems, Inc., Civil Action No. 7:17-CV-00505 (Western District of Va. Feb. 1, 2018).
