Combat service as infantry company commander, combat engineer platoon leader and Special Forces long-range reconnaissance team member (Recon Team California, MACSOG). Non-combat service as armor brigade intelligence officer and infantry battalion operations officer. Ranger Department instructor, Ranger camp operations officer, tactical officer of Ranger Class 7-77 and commander of the 1st Ranger Company. Professor of Military Science at Santa Clara University. Graduate of the U.S. Army's Command and General Staff College. Military decorations and awards include: Combat Infantry Badge; Master Parachutist Badge; Ranger Tab; Presidential Unit Citation (awarded to Military Assistance Command Vietnam Studies and Observations Group for the unit's combat actions during period of service as reconnaissance team member); Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device; Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Service (2 awards); Air Medal (5 awards); Purple Heart; Meritorious Service Medal; and Army Commendation Medal.
