Biography

Mr. Lau brings with him a wealth of experience in government practice both at a county and state level. He has worked in the State Legislature and served as the Judiciary Committee Clerk for the Judiciary Committee in the 1978 Constitutional Convention. From 1981 to 1988, Mr. Lau served as a Deputy Corporation Counsel for the City and County of Honolulu representing, among others, the City personnel office in various labor and workers compensation matters. From 1988 to 1991, Mr. Lau served as a Deputy Attorney General for the State of Hawaii representing the State affordable housing agency in the initial development of the Villages of Kapolei.

Community Involvement

Outside of the office, Mr. Lau has been active in the City's Neighborhood Board Program, served as a board member and officer of the nonprofit Hawaii Committee for Humanities and served as the Hawaii alumni recruiting coordinator for Colgate University. He is a member of the Hawaii and Wisconsin State Bar Associations.

Since he joined Kobayashi, Sugita & Goda in 1991, Mr. Lau has used his extensive government background and experience to advise and represent clients before all of the various State and county land use and zoning agencies, including the Department of Land and Natural Resources, the City Department of Planning and Permitting and various other county planning departments throughout the State of Hawaii. In addition, he has advised and represented clients in bid protests involving public contracts, defense of campaign spending violations, as well as advising and representing clients in various lobbying matters before the State Legislature, as well as the City Council. As part of his representation of various development groups, Mr. Lau has advised and represented clients on a number of title matters, including petitions before the State Land Court and work in major purchase and sales transactions.
