Biography

Ms. Cissell, a shareholder in the firm’s Memphis office, has experience in civil litigation matters. She focuses her practice on medical malpractice defense. Ms. Cissell has extensive experience trying medical malpractice lawsuits to verdict, as well as appellate experience at the state and federal levels. Ms. Cissell previously served as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable James M. Tharpe and the Honorable Robert A. Lanier.

Reported Cases:
REPRESENTATIVE EXPERIENCE: In 2014, Ms. Cissell, Ms. Magee and Ms. Bursi successfully defended a gynecologist in a medical malpractice trial. The Plaintiff alleged, among other things, lack of informed consent. The trial lasted two weeks and involved four expert witnesses and several fact witnesses. At the close of Plaintiff's proof, the Court granted a directed verdict to the Defendant as to Plaintiff's claims for medical battery, negligence per se, loss of earnings and earning capacity, and punitive damages. The jury deliberated for less than five hours and returned a verdict for the Defendant, finding that the doctor had acted in accordance with the recognized standard of acceptable professional practice in obtaining informed consent from the patient.
