Biography

Daniel Jacobs graduated from Brandeis University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and then went on to Albany School of Law of Union University to earn his Juris Doctorate. Prior to joining Nathan, Dumm & Mayer, Dan’s career focused on representing employees in civil litigation, individually and through union counsel. He has prosecuted, defended, and argued on appeal employment-related claims in federal and state courts, federal and state administrative agencies, and/or arbitration, and has counseled employees, unions, and employers on various employment-related issues under federal, state, and municipal law.

Dan’s employment-focused litigation experience and expertise encompass federal, state, and municipal claims of or for discrimination, retaliation/whistle-blowing, interference, civil rights violations (due process, equal protection, unreasonable search and seizure, inadequate medical care to incarcerated individuals, freedom of speech, Monell liability), illegal payroll practices (minimum wage, overtime, wage deductions, failure to timely pay), severance/pension benefits, retiree insurance benefits, breach of contract/quasi-contracts, restrictive covenants, fraud, defamation, tortious interference with contract, and negligence.

As union counsel, Dan has represented in litigation and assisted in labor relations, law enforcement officers, firefighters, public transportation workers, and community college educators/custodial staff. Dan has experience litigating improper practice charges filed with the N.Y. Public Employees Relations Board alleging failure to negotiate over mandatory subjects of negotiation, illicit retaliation, and interference with union rights. He also has experience with contract grievances and defending employees within administrative investigation, discipline, and appeal proceedings.
