Biography

Deborah “Debbie” Cohen, a Chicago native, grew up in the northern suburbs and pursued her undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, earning a degree in Communication Science and Rhetorical Studies. This foundation equipped her with exceptional skills in analysis, argumentation, and effective communication. Following diverse early career experiences, including roles in sales, waitressing, and media, she decided to pursue a career in law, becoming the first attorney in her family. While attending Chicago-Kent College of Law, Ms. Cohen excelled in trial advocacy and was selected for the school’s elite trial team. She gained recognition as the "Best Trial Advocate" at a prestigious competition in Atlanta, Georgia. After graduation, she joined the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, where she prosecuted a wide range of cases, from misdemeanors to serious felonies, including murder.

Ms. Cohen later opened her own law firm, initially focusing on criminal defense and serving as an Assistant Special Prosecutor and Investigator for the Cook County Independent Inspector General’s Office. Her personal experiences led her to transition into family law, where she now handles cases involving divorce, child custody, and protection orders. Known for her meticulous preparation and empathy, Ms. Cohen is a tenacious advocate for her clients.
