Biography

Lauren Matosziuk’s scientific expertise informs her belief that complex litigation can be a tool for environmental stewardship.

Lauren began her career as a chemist, earning a B.S. in chemistry from Duquesne University and a Ph.D. in chemistry from Northwestern University. Initially she worked as a synthetic chemist, making new organic molecules in the lab. She later transitioned into more ecologically-focused science in the Forestry Department at Oregon State University, where she researched the impacts of wildfire on soil and water quality, and obtained an M.S. in Sustainable Forest Management. She believes her background as a scientist gives her a deep understanding of data and statistics, and allows her to speak the same language as many of the experts she encounters in the world of complex litigation.

As her involvement with environmental issues deepened, Lauren developed the sense that for all the consequential work that scientists do, they are often limited by incremental progress. She saw law as a way to have a more direct positive impact on people. After earning a J.D. from Lewis & Clark Law School, she began her legal career as a trial attorney in the Environment and Natural Resources Division at the United States Department of Justice. She worked in the Environmental Enforcement Section, where she represented the Environmental Protection Agency in its enforcement of the Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act, and its efforts to clean up hazardous waste sites under CERCLA.

Lauren was drawn to Keller Rohrback “because of the work they do and where they do it.” She respects the fact that the firm handles cases of smaller, more local stature alongside multi-district litigation with nationwide implications. She considers the Pacific Northwest an ideal homebase, where she likes to spend all her free time in the mountains—ultra-running, cross-country skiing, gravel biking, rock climbing, and appreciating good moss.
