Fred Romano has been advising clients on intellectual property and commercial matters for over 35 years. He negotiates complex business agreements involving the sale and licensing of intellectual property rights. His experience includes the formation of technology partnerships and development of licensing programs based on copyrights, trademarks, and patents. A significant portion of Fred’s practice is devoted to start-up companies. He frequently advises new clients on how to best protect products under domestic and international intellectual property laws. Fred is available to provide presentations tailored to the needs of small companies and business groups on protecting and leveraging their intellectual property. He also counsels clients on patent, copyright and trademark infringement concerns, litigation, cost-effective dispute resolution and avoiding liability.
Fred implements comprehensive intellectual property protection strategies for emerging market opportunities and creates patent portfolios that maximize company valuations. He has developed trademark and patent strategies in a diverse group of industries, including consumer electronics, wind power, medical systems, and solar energy. His technical expertise spans physics, biophysics, chemistry, materials science, analog and digital electronics, electro-optics, machine vision, semiconductor products, data processing systems, machine learning and several medical technologies. His patent filings also cover the fields of nanotechnology, imaging systems, software systems, optics, and RF communications. Growing areas in Fred’s patent practice include protecting innovations in the diverse software application market for handheld devices, and Artificial Intelligence.
In his transactional practice, Fred reviews, prepares, and negotiates commercial agreements including value-added reseller and sales representation agreements. He also drafts agreements for technical consulting services, R&D, technology transfers and licensing. When clients disclose proprietary information to potential partners, customers, and contractors, appropriate terms are provided to assure confidentiality and assessments are made of whether to file provisional patent applications beforehand. Before forming Accel IP Law with his partners, Fred was a shareholder in an Orlando IP Law Practice for over fifteen years.
In his corporate practices, Fred served as license counsel, patent counsel, litigation manager. Fred also served as the commercial transactions attorney for multiple general managers. He was responsible for several international business units, several international manufacturing operations and global procurement in three Fortune 500 companies. He has extensive experience in developing intellectual property programs, securing patent rights, negotiations and the settlement of infringement matters.
Prior to beginning his legal career, Fred pursued his interests in biophysics. He has also held senior positions with the U.S. Department of the Navy and the U.S. Department of Transportation. He worked as a materials engineer, research scientist, and manager of environmental research programs.
Community and Personal Activities
Served three terms as President, Ascension Catholic School Board, six terms as Board Member; avid cyclist; enjoys home remodeling, auto restoration, and gardening.
