Gary Becker

We are saddened by the passing of Gary Becker, our esteemed Founding Member, who passed away after a prolonged illness. Gary was a trailblazer in legal advertising, advocating for lawyers' rights to commercial free speech under the United States and Kentucky Constitutions. He often highlighted that attorneys, including Abraham Lincoln, historically engaged in legal advertising until prohibitions were imposed by powerful corporate law firms seeking to monopolize the legal market. In 1985, Gary shifted his focus from defending insurance companies and corporations to exclusively representing ordinary individuals, driven by a desire to level the playing field against the wealthy and influential.

Gary's dedication to professionalism and integrity set a standard for personal injury lawyers in our region. Upon retiring from legal practice in 2004, Gary devoted himself to philanthropy, establishing a charitable foundation that has significantly impacted countless lives for the better.

Despite his success, Gary remained rooted in his middle-class upbringing in Southern Indiana. He generously supported those less fortunate, offering practical vocational training and providing shelter and warmth to the homeless during harsh winters. While Gary was vocal about fairness and justice for his clients, his commitment to spirituality and helping the disadvantaged was quietly profound.
