Justice Jeannette Theriot Knoll, Retired, has dedicated 34 years to
the judiciary, leaving an indelible mark on Louisiana's legal
landscape. Breaking barriers in 1983, she secured her place in
history as the first woman elected to a reviewing court in Louisiana,
a milestone achieved amidst the demands of motherhood and a
relentless campaign across the Third Circuit Court of Appeal's First
District. Her subsequent election to the Louisiana Supreme Court in
1996 further solidified her legacy of trailblazing leadership and
unwavering commitment to justice.
Throughout her
illustrious career, Justice Knoll has shaped Louisiana law through
her discerning scrutiny of over 58,000 writ applications and the
authorship of 184 full opinions during her 20-year tenure on the
Louisiana Supreme Court. Her impactful contributions extend to the
856 opinions crafted during her 14-year tenure on the Third Circuit
Court of Appeal, embodying a profound dedication to legal excellence

Justice Knoll's
journey began in Gueydan, Louisiana, where she developed a passion
for justice amidst a bustling family of ten. A gifted operatic
soprano with dreams of the Metropolitan Opera, her path pivoted
toward law after the loss of her beloved mother. Graduating from
Loyola University with degrees in political science and law, she
embarked on a diverse legal career, including service as an indigent
defender and Assistant District Attorney. Her scholarly pursuits
culminated in a Master of Laws degree from the University of Virginia
School of Law, enriching her understanding of judicial processes and
doctrine.
Beyond her
professional accolades, Justice Knoll treasures her roles as wife,
mother, and grandmother above all else. Celebrating nearly five
decades of marriage to Jerold Edward "Eddie" Knoll, she
finds joy in raising five sons and embracing the blessings of eleven
grandchildren. In retirement, she cherishes moments with her loving
family in Marksville, Louisiana, embodying a legacy of service,
integrity, and enduring devotion.
