Biography

Jacob D. Massee is a partner in the litigation section of the firm. Mr. Massee concentrates his trial practice in the areas of municipal liability, public entity law, correctional defense litigation, correctional health care defense, general liability defense, employment law, plaintiff's personal injury/wrongful death, and business litigation.A native of Fitzgerald, Georgia, Mr. Massee graduated from the University of Georgia in 2003, where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing. While attending the University of Georgia, Mr. Massee was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and was a Justice for the school's University Judiciary.Mr. Massee attended the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University where he received his Juris Doctor in 2007. Mr. Massee was a member of the Moot Court Board, and served as Chair of the Board during his 3L year. Mr. Massee also received the 1L Faculty Award in Legal Writing and his Certificate in Advanced Legal Writing, Research and Drafting. At the conclusion of his law school career, Mr. Massee was one of the few students in his class admitted to the Order of Barristers.Mr. Massee started his career at Oliver Maner in 2007. During his first stint with the firm, he served as President of the Savannah Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division, Board Member of the State Bar of Georgia's YLD Board of Governors, and Chair of the State Bar of Georgia's Appellate Admissions Committee.In 2013, Mr. Massee moved to Denver, Colorado, where he was admitted to practice in Colorado and appointed as an Assistant Attorney General with the Colorado Department of Law. During his time with the Department, Mr. Massee represented the State of Colorado in various disputes involving state agencies, including defense litigation for the Colorado Department of Corrections, his primary client. After a two-year stint with the Department of Law, Mr. Massee practiced for two-and-a-half years with a regional litigation firm in Denver, Hall & Evans, LLC, where he defended numerous clients in various civil practice areas, including correctional defense litigation, governmental and quasi-governmental operations, employment law, high exposure highway accidents, security company liability, criminal defense, slip and fall, wrongful death and insurance law.In 2018, Mr. Massee returned home to Savannah where he re-joined the firm and continued to expand the diverse practice he started in Georgia and developed in Colorado. Though his practice overlaps many areas of the law, Mr. Massee has acquired a keen interest in civil rights defense, correctional defense, and governmental entity liability. Mr. Massee is admitted to practice before all Georgia and Colorado state courts, including the Georgia Supreme Court and the Georgia Court of Appeals. Mr. Massee is also admitted to practice before the United States District Courts for the Southern, Middle and Northern Districts of Georgia, the United States District Court for the District of Colorado, and the United States Courts of Appeals for the Tenth and Eleventh Circuits.Mr. Massee has presented at many Continuing Legal Education seminars and authored materials covering a wide variety of topics. In particular, Mr. Massee was a faculty member at the 2017 National Business Institute's Human Resource Law Boot Camp, in which he presented on Employment Law Mediation and the National Labor Relations Board. Mr. Massee also penned the Wyoming section of DRI's 2017 publication: "The Law of Life Insurance: Key Issues in Each State."
