Biography

Partner and Attorney Jane E. Cowley is an accomplished legal professional that holds a master’s degree in Social Work and Juris Doctor from the University of Connecticut. With a legal career spanning over two decades, Jane is recognized for her excellence in complex family law matters and has a reputation as one the top divorce lawyers in the Western United States. She is adept in handling highly contentious custody proceedings as well as complex, high-asset divisions and equitable distribution matters and has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards throughout her career.

Jane works with tenacity and devotion to navigate her clients through the divorce process and help them make advantageous decisions regarding child custody and support, property division, maintenance, and other related matters. She provides direct representation as well as settlement and mediation services and is intensely focused on all areas of law that impact children, youth, and families. This includes divorce, adoption, stepparent adoption, parental rights, child support, grandparent visitation, and post-decree matters.

In addition to her exemplary performance, Jane’s dedication to law, helping others, and serving her community can be witnessed in her relentless pursuit of knowledge. After leaving her hometown in the Silver Valley in North Idaho, she graduated from the University of Puget Sound in 1994. Later, Jane enrolled in graduate school at the University of Connecticut and earned a master’s degree in Social Work in 2001 and a Doctorate in Law in 2002. This highly specialized skill set has allowed her to bring unique perspective and insight to her legal work and led to a level of success rarely accomplished by professionals in her field.

Jane is described by her clients as being both compassionate and courageous. She is always considerate of their needs and strives to help them resolve their conflicts and reach favorable agreements in a diplomatic manner. This reduces the risk of the need for emotionally and financially burdensome court battles. At the same time, she will not hesitate to take her clients' issues to court when necessary to protect their rights, happiness, and future. She finds tremendous fulfillment from being able to help members of her community during some of the most difficult and uncertain times in their lives.

In addition to family law, Jane possesses in-depth experience in other civil matters, including employment law and real estate litigation. She is rated "AV Preeminent" by Martindale-Hubbell's peer-reviewed rating service and has been consistently selected by her peers for inclusion in "The Best Lawyers in America," Women in the Law, and Family Law editions and is recognized by Super Lawyers. Additionally, she is a Certified Member of The Society for Human Resource Management and is a recognized expert and leader in the HR field.
