Biography

Jeff, a fifth-generation Montanan, grew up in Great Falls. He attended Yale University then the University of Wisconsin Law School where he worked with the Wisconsin Innocence Project to remedy wrongful convictions. Jeff returned to Montana in 2013 and has been with the Goetz firm ever since.Jeff maintains a diverse trial and appellate practice. He has represented plaintiffs and defendants in a variety of civil matters involving fraud, breach of contract, tortious interference, intra-corporate disputes, land use and access issues, insurance coverage and bad faith, personal injury and wrongful death, and public records disputes and constitutional claims. He has also been deputized as a Special Attorney General to investigate and prosecute campaign finance violations on behalf of the Montana Commissioner of Political Practices.Jeff is licensed to practice in Montana and Wisconsin and has also been admitted to the U.S. District Court for the District of Montana, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the U.S. Court of Federal Claims. He is a member of the American Bar Association and the Montana Trial Lawyers Association. He has served on the board of directors of the Gallatin County Bar Association since 2019.He has been recognized as a Super Lawyers “Rising Star” each year since 2020.Outside of work, Jeff enjoys spending time with his wife Karolina and their two children.

Wilkie v. Hartford Underwriters Insurance Co ., 2021 MT 221, 405 Mont. 259, 494 P.3d 892, on appeal from No. DV-20-367B (Mont. 18th Jud. Dist. Ct. 2020). Unanimous opinion affirming client’s right to pursue his claims, clarifying the mootness doctrine and the limits of the voluntary cessation exception. Subsequent confidential settlement

Anderson v. Deere & Co ., 2018 MT 257, 393 Mont. 157, 429 P.3d 635, on appeal from No. DV-16-471 (Mont. 4th Jud. Dist. Ct. 2016). Successfully resisted arbitration of tortious interference claims in an appeal about the construction and enforcement of an arbitration clause and the limits on agreements to arbitrate. Subsequent confidential settlement

Kulko v. Davail, Inc ., 2015 MT 340, 381 Mont. 511, 363 P.3d 430, on appeal from No. ADV-13-882 (Mont. 1st Jud. Dist. Ct. 2013). After achieving corporate dissolution on behalf of an oppressed minority shareholder, prevailed on appeal defending the oppressed shareholders’ rights to seek and recover monetary damages for fraud and breach of fiduciary duty in addition to corporate dissolution. Unanimous en banc opinion. Subsequent confidential settlement

Beebe v. Bozeman Deaconess, et al., No. DV-14-112A (Mont. 18th Jud. Dist. Ct. 2014), Judge Holly B. Brown presiding). Professional negligence and wrongful death case involving a three-week jury trial. Resolved by a confidential settlement while pending appeal.
