Jeffrey R. Bengel

Jeff Bengel is a shareholder in the Litigation Group at Babst Calland. Mr. Bengel’s practice focuses on representing clients in complex commercial litigation, government enforcement actions, and internal investigations. An experienced trial attorney, he has tried a number of cases to jury verdict in federal court. He has litigated complex matters involving a variety of industries including finance, digital assets, shipping, export, food and drugs, and healthcare.

Prior to joining Babst Calland, Mr. Bengel served for eight years as an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania. Most recently, he was Chief of the Economic, Cyber, and National Security Crimes Section, where he investigated and prosecuted matters involving various fraud, public corruption, money laundering, and regulatory offenses. As an AUSA, Mr. Bengel received awards for outstanding performance from his office and from the Law Enforcement Agency Directors of Western Pennsylvania. Before entering government service, he was a litigation associate in the Washington, D.C. office of an international law firm, where his practice focused on antitrust and white-collar investigations.

Background

Mr. Bengel received his undergraduate degree, cum laude, from Harvard College in 2009, with honors in Government and a secondary field in Economics. He received his law degree, magna cum laude, from the New York University School of Law in 2013, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif and served as Managing Editor of the Annual Survey of American Law. He also completed a two-year clerkship with the Honorable John D. Bates, on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.

Memberships and Affiliations

Mr. Bengel is currently licensed to practice in the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania and Virginia, and before the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. He is a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association, where he previously served as co-chair of the Federal Criminal Practice Subcommittee, and of the Advisory Committee on the Local Rules for the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
