Biography

For over fifty years Jonathan L. Mate has practiced law with a specialty in Wills, Trusts and Estates. He was first admitted to the Bar of the State of New York in 1970, and thereafter he was admitted to the Bars of New Jersey and Florida. Before becoming Counsel to Newman, Simpson & Cohen, Jon was a partner in the New York law firm of Hesterberg & Keller, LLP, a firm with a reputation for their expertise in all types of estate matters including estate planning, probate, estate administration, estate litigation, succession planning, and general real estate transactions. Mr. Mate graduated from Boston University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1967. He attended Brooklyn Law School and received his Juris Doctor degree in 1970 and a Master of Laws degree (LL.M) in Taxation from New York University in 1980.

Jon is a member of the Real Property, Trust & Estate Law Section of the American Bar Association, the Real Property and Probate Trust Law Section of the Florida Bar and the Bergen County Bar Association (New Jersey). He is also a member of the Greater New Jersey Estate Planning Council. Jon has earned an AV® Preeminent™ Peer Review rating from Martindale-Hubbell®.

Jon’s clients include high net worth individuals for whom he has provided legal services in connection with estate planning, succession planning, probate administration and various estate tax issues in New York, New Jersey, and Florida. Jon regularly consults with the firm’s business clients to assist them with their business succession and estate planning needs.

Jon has served on the Board of Trustees of the YJCC of Bergen County and has acted as counsel to that organization and is a former member of the Endowment Committee. He has also been appointed as a Guardian ad Litem by the Surrogate of New York County in several matters and has served as an Executor and Trustee in various estates.
