Biography

Joseph Shmulewitz is a Partner at the firm whose practice is focused primarily on the defense of hospitals, physicians, and other healthcare providers in high-stakes medical malpractice litigation.

Mr. Shmulewitz handles all aspects of litigation from inception through trial, bringing a trial-driven approach to case strategy. He has tried cases to verdict and regularly represents clients in all manner of litigation including dispositive motion practice, expert and fact discovery, depositions, court appearances, mediations, settlement and trial.

In addition to medical malpractice defense, Mr. Shmulewitz represents clients in general liability, premises liability, and products liability matters in both New York and New Jersey state courts. He also maintains an active federal practice representing the City of New York in civil rights litigation under 42 U.S.C. 1983, where he has achieved favorable results including dismissals and summary judgment.

Before entering private practice, Mr. Shmulewitz served as an Assistant District Attorney in the Bronx County District Attorney’s Office. As a prosecutor, he managed a demanding, high-volume caseload and tried more than 20 cases to verdict. That courtroom experience continues to inform his advocacy on behalf of institutional and professional clients.

Mr. Shmulewitz has been recognized as a Rising Star in Medical Malpractice Defense by Super Lawyers Metro New York Magazine.
