Biography

Joseph Kim is a global project finance and M&A lawyer, Managing Shareholder of Greenberg Traurig's Singapore office, and head of the firm's Asia Energy and Infrastructure Practice. Joseph focuses his practice on energy and infrastructure projects, with deep experience in projects involving Japanese and Korean-led cross-border investments. With over two decades of experience in the renewables, conventional and nuclear power projects, Joseph advises first-of-its-kind and large-scale power projects across the globe. Understanding that power sector clients face diverse and complex issues, he develops custom strategies to help clients address their legal needs.

Joseph advises investors, sponsors, export credit agencies, commercial lenders, bilateral and multilateral agencies, and underwriters in connection with financing, acquiring, and developing a wide range of international energy and telecommunications projects. His experience includes matters involving power, upstream liquefied natural gas (LNG), natural resources, and renewable energy projects in Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas.

Experience: Energy - Conventional Power: Advising the largest Japanese utility in its bid to acquire an interest in BB Power Holdings, a renewables platform company in Vietnam.; Advising a consortium of global infrastructure fund, superannuation fund and telecom company in its bid to acquire JPY 300 billion Japan Renewable Energy, a renewables platform company in Japan.; Advising Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI), and international lenders in connection with the financing of the 1.32GW Van Phong 1 coal-fired power plant project in Vietnam - first project to be financed under the 70:30 FCR in Vietnam.; Advising K-EXIM in the US$1.5 billion multi-tranche debt financing for the 1, 200MW Mong Duong 2 coal-fired power project in Quang Ninh province, Vietnam. This transaction was awarded 'Best Vietnam Deal of the Year 2011' by FinanceAsia, 'Deal of the Year 2011' by IFR Asia and ASIAN-MENA COUNSEL and 'Asia-Pacific Power Deal of the Year 2011' by Project Finance Magazine and Project Finance International.; Advising PT Cirebon Electric Power, a consortium led by Marubeni Corporation and Korea Midland Power Co., Ltd., in the development and financing of a 660 MW Cirebon coal-fired power project in Indonesia. The Cirebon Project is the first IPP greenfield power generation facility awarded by the Indonesian government since the 1997 Asian financial crisis. JBIC and K-EXIM structured and negotiated the financing.; Energy - Nuclear: Advising Exelon Corporation, America's leading nuclear operator, on the formation of a new 50:50 joint venture with the Japan Atomic Power Company, a pioneer in Japan's nuclear power industry.; Energy - LNG: Advising JBIC, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ (as lead arranger) and the commercial lenders in the US$1.5 billion financing provided to Woodside for the development of the Pluto LNG project in Western Australia.; Energy - M&A: Advising Marubeni Corporation and Tokyo Electric Power Company in connection with the US$3.7 billion acquisition of Mirant's power projects in Sual, Pagbilao and Ilijan, Philippines and the related bridge mezzanine and US$3 billion limited recourse financings. The deal was named 'Deal of the Year 2007' by Asian-Counsel.; The above representations were handled by Mr. Kim prior to his joining Greenberg Traurig, LLP.
