Lindsey Balaco is an
attorney at Simmons Hanly Conroy, working out of the Alton office. She joined
the firm in 2021, focusing her practice on pharmaceutical clients with an
emphasis on cases involving opioids. Her role centers on review of important
and sensitive documents, research tasks and preparation for depositions.
“Reliance on
technology today means computer documents and email conversations are
voluminous, necessitating a patient and discerning eye to sift through them and
uncover important evidence,” she said. “Reviewing clients’ documents is
important for making sure privileged and sensitive information is protected.”
As part of the opioid
litigation team, she works closely with the other attorneys and is a patient
and meticulous member. She ensures that no document is left unturned. She builds
a timeline for supporting evidence and locates all key documents needed for a
client’s case. Her past experience as a document review attorney plays an
important role in her current position at the firm.
Fighting
the Opioid Epidemic
Lindsey
works on the firm’s discovery team in the ongoing National Prescription Opiates
Multidistrict Litigation. The MDL represents local governments across the country,
alleging drug companies contributed to the opioid crisis by carelessly
promoting painkillers and downplaying addiction risks.
She knows how crucial electronic discovery is in the litigation
process as she also serves on the team conducting document
review for the firm’s opioid litigation filed in state courts, including New
York and Pennsylvania. Her attention to detail ensures evidence and documents
are accurate and consistent for the attorneys in court.
Although
Lindsey works behind the scenes, she understands the needs of the team’s
clients and how the firm’s attorneys treat each and every one. “Total client
care involves treating the client and his or her concerns with respect and
dignity on a personal and professional level, and advocating for the client
with your mind, words, actions, and your heart,” Lindsey said.
Background
and Experience
Lindsey has been an attorney for six years.
Prior to joining Simmons Hanly Conroy, she held a position at a company serving
as a global leader in legal services and performed quality control reviews of
important documents. She also coded documents.
Besides that role, she has work experience as
an associate attorney at two St. Louis law firms. At these positions, Lindsey
represented clients in all court proceedings, managed client relationships by
explaining laws and procedures and drafted and prepared litigation documents. She
also researched many topics, including wrongful death, personal injury and
wrongful termination cases.
Lindsey graduated from St. Louis University
Law School in 2015, where she received a Dean’s Select Scholarship. In 2011,
she received her undergraduate degree in sociology, also from St. Louis
University. As an undergraduate, she was an active member of Alpha Delta Pi,
honored as a Best Senior Capstone nominee and graduated cum laude.
When she’s not working, Lindsey enjoys reading, baking and spending time with her
husband and their pets, a cat and two dogs.
