Mary McKinney Flaherty

Mary McKinney Flaherty is an attorney and mediator who concentrates her practice on the formation, growth, and dissolution of family relationships and family businesses.

She assists clients in planning, negotiating, and drafting the various legal agreements surrounding the family relationship including prenuptial agreements, cohabitation agreements, adoptions, separation agreements, support and custody arrangements, divorce, equitable distribution, and marital settlement agreements. Similarly, she assists family businesses in identifying and resolving the complex issues that arise from forming, growing, and dissolving businesses involving multiple family members.

Mary is committed to resolving differences without litigation wherever possible and has been appointed to serve as Co-Chair of the Collaborative Law Committee of the Allegheny County Bar Association ("ACBA") and Vice Chair of the ACBA's ADR Committee. In 2018, she was elected to serve a three-year term on the ACBA Judiciary Committee and the ACBA Women in the Law Division Council and is a co-Chair of the ACBA Women in the Law Division's Pathways to the Bench Committee. She has been selected by her peers as a Thomson Reuters Super Lawyers Rising Star in Family Law every year she has practiced in the area.

Mary maintains an active pro bono practice and is a fellow of Allegheny County Bar Foundation, co-Chair of the Pro Bono Committee of the ACBA's Family Law Section, and a regular volunteer for Neighborhood Legal Services Association, the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund, and the Pittsburgh Pro Bono Project.

Mary is a 2005 graduate of the University of Chicago Law School and a 2002 graduate of Georgetown University, magna cum laude. While in Law School, she was an articles editor of the 2004 University of Chicago Legal Forum: The Public and Private Faces of Family Law.

A proud resident of the City of Pittsburgh and a lover of the arts, she serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, where she is co-chair of the Strategic Planning Committee. She is also actively involved with the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Keepers of the Pittsburgh Promise, and the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy. On weekends, you can find her in the yoga studio or enjoying the theatre, a new restaurant, or a stroll around the city with her husband, Mark.
