Matt was born in Cecil County, Maryland. He attended Towson University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science, before moving on to the University of Massachusetts School of Law for his Juris Doctor. While in law school, Matt was a Lead Editor on the UMass Law Review and an active member of the Sports, Entertainment, and Art Law Club. At UMass, Matt worked with various legal services, including the Mashpee Wampanoag Legal Services Clinic, where he gained invaluable experience in civil litigation.
